A Rocking Christmas Night in Christchurch

Filed under: New Zealand — Russell @ 3:49 pm

I woke up to a 4.2 earthquake last night. It was a few kilometres from the house. At first I thought Carol was jumping on the bed but the whole room was moving. It was the strongest quake I’ve every experienced; not frightening but very impressive.

Best quake yesterday was 4.9.

Happy holidays!!! Just catching up on your travels. Loved reading your Moroccan posts and looking forward to reading about your cruise and New Zealand!!!! When Shawn and I dream about New Zealand, Christchurch is our town of choice – would love to see pictures and your comments on the place!! Those are quite the earthquakes – is that typical?

Our Nephew lives in Rolleston, NZ. Isn’t that part of Christchurch? We actually skyped with him from his Dad’s on Christmas day. So close and yet so far!! Happy New Year Russell and Carol!

These quakes are unusual. Until the 7.1 quake in September Christchurch didn’t realized they were sitting on a fault. The city has really suffered and these recent quakes continue to do damage.

In comparison to Haiti they have been lucky. No deaths and a few serious injuries compared to a quarter million dead in Haiti.
